Welcome Golara Haghtalab in discussing her memoir Immigrant: Courage Required!

About Immigrant: Courage Required:

Born and raised in Iran, Golara Haghtalab was twenty-one when she first stepped onto American soil. Now, having turned thirty, Immigrant: Courage Required follows her on an average day as she goes about her new life and work. But, in truth, this day is anything but normal as we are immersed in flashback after flashback to her previous life in Iran and the early days of her life in the U.S. Every time Haghtalab transports back to a different point in her life, we get another piece of her history, and she has the opportunity to re-evaluate and re-learn lessons from the past.

We see her move through the struggles of transitioning into a new culture and learning how to express herself, all while juggling several other languages, cultures, and customs in her brain. She grapples with figuring out just who she is in this new world while still holding onto the person she was before her immigration. Immigrant is about the change and adaptation of a woman on her journey to self-realization in a new country, and the courage required to face the unknown.

Golara Haghtalab holds a Bachelor’s degree in both chemistry and studio arts from University of Virginia and will be graduating with a Master’s in organization development from American University this December. As part of her creative engagements, Golara has facilitated several community art workshops and given speeches at the Creative Mornings and local design gatherings.

In the midst of the recent social justice movements that were filled with voices wishing to be heard, Golara was inspired to share her own voice in her memoir Immigrant: Courage Required. As an immigrant from Iran, Golara wanted to share her story of change and adaptation because she thinks everyone can learn something from immigrants about accepting what is, letting go of what isn’t working, and starting anew.
